Filing a car insurance claim correctly ensures faster settlement. This guide covers both cashless and reimbursement claim processes for Indian car owners.

Understanding the car insurance claim process can save hours of frustration during an already stressful situation. India's motor insurance ecosystem processes millions of claims annually, with proper documentation and process adherence determining claim settlement speed. ## Types of Car Insurance Claims ### Own Damage Claim An own damage claim covers damage to your vehicle from accidents, theft, fire, or natural disasters. The claim is filed when you are at fault or when the at-fault party cannot be identified (like in hit-and-run cases). The own damage section of your policy covers repair costs or vehicle value in case of total loss. ### Third-Party Claim A third-party claim compensates injury or property damage caused to another party. This is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, and the insurer pays directly to the third party. You cannot claim third-party damage to your own vehicle through this component. ## Cashless Claim Process Cashless claims are processed directly between the insurer and the network garage without you paying repair costs upfront. Locate a network garage through your insurer's app or website, and intimate the claim before or within 24 hours of the incident. At the network garage, submit the claim form, policy copy, and FIR (if required for accident cases). The surveyor appointed by the insurer examines the vehicle and approves repair costs. The garage proceeds with repairs, billing the insurer directly for approved amounts. Your liability is limited to depreciation deducted from certain parts, compulsory deductible, and any amounts exceeding policy limits. Most insurers have standardized cashless claim processing within 2-5 days for straightforward cases. ## Reimbursement Claim Process If you repair at a non-network garage or pay for emergency repairs before insurer approval, you can claim reimbursement. Retain all repair invoices, payment receipts, and survey reports as documentation. Submit the claim form with original invoices, payment receipts, FIR copy (for accidents), repair estimates, and photographs of damage to your insurer. The claims team verifies documents and may request additional information before approving reimbursement. Reimbursement typically takes 15-30 days from complete document submission. The claim amount is reimbursed after deducting depreciation, compulsory deductible, and policy exclusions. ## Documents Required for Claim The standard documents include duly signed claim form, copy of registration certificate, copy of driving license, copy of insurance policy, FIR for accident cases, repair estimates and invoices, and photographs of damaged vehicle. For theft claims, an FIR and final police report are additionally required.
