14 min read5 December 2025Updated 25 May 2026GST registration is mandatory for businesses exceeding Rs 20 lakh turnover. This guide covers the complete online registration process, documents required, and GSTIN format.
The Goods and Services Tax has unified India's fragmented indirect tax structure into one comprehensive levy. Understanding GST registration requirements and the online process helps businesses comply efficiently.
## Who Must Register for GST
Every business with aggregate turnover exceeding Rs 20 lakh in a financial year must register under GST. For businesses in northeastern states, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the threshold is Rs 10 lakh. Casual taxpayers, non-resident taxable persons, and e-commerce operators must register regardless of turnover.
Even below threshold businesses should consider voluntary registration to claim input tax credit on purchases and present a more professional image to customers who can claim GST credit. Many B2B businesses prefer working only with GST-registered vendors.
## Documents Required for Registration
Proprietors need PAN card, Aadhaar card, bank account details, and address proof. Partnership firms require partnership deed, PAN of firm, and partners' proofs. Companies need Certificate of Incorporation, PAN of company, Memorandum of Association, and Board Resolution authorizing the registration.
The GST portal requires photographs and identity proofs of promoters or partners. Digital signature or EVC (electronic verification code) is required for authorized signatories. All documents must be self-attested and uploaded in PDF or JPEG format with specified file size limits.
## Step by Step Registration Process
Visit the GST portal (www.gst.gov.in) and click Register. On the New Registration page, select Taxpayer type, state, and district. Enter PAN (system validates automatically), mobile number, and email address to receive OTPs for verification.
Complete Form GST REG-01 with business details including trade name, constitution, principal place of business, and details of promoters. Upload required documents in specified formats. After submission, receive Application Reference Number (ARN) via SMS and email.
The application is processed within 3-7 working days by the jurisdictional officer. If additional information is required, a clarification request (Form GST REG-03) is raised. Once approved, the GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is generated and certificate is downloadable from the portal.
## Understanding Your GSTIN
The 15-digit GSTIN follows a standardized format: first 2 digits represent state code, next 10 characters are PAN number, 13th character indicates entity type, 14th character is Z by default, and the last character is a check digit. For example, GSTIN 27AAACH1234F1ZL belongs to a Maharashtra company with PAN AACH1234F.
