How to transfer shares from one demat account to another without paying charges?

Asked 5 Nov 2025·2341 views
I have shares in a CDSL demat account with an old broker that charges high maintenance fees. I want to transfer my holdings to a Zerodha demat account. I have about 30 different stocks including some penny stocks. What is the process for transferring shares between demat accounts? Are there any charges? Can I do an off-market transfer? How long does it take?

You can transfer shares via DIS (Delivery Instruction Slip) to your Zerodha demat account. For NSDL/CDSL to CDSL transfers, use the TPSM (Transfer Process for Securities in physical form) or through your broker's platform. Off-market transfers to your own demat account (different broker) are free on CDSL if done through their online portal Easiest. Intra-broker transfers (same broker) are always free. Zerodha charges ₹25 per scrip for off-market deliveries if using their transfer form, but free if you do it yourself via CDSL Easiest.
