Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR) is a key metric that measures the percentage of insurance claims settled by an insurance company out of the total claims received in a given financial year.

It is expressed as a percentage and is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing an insurance provider. A higher CSR indicates that the insurer is more likely to honour claims, while a lower CSR may signal claim rejection issues. What is Claim Settlement Ratio? If an insurance company receives 1,00,000 death claims in a year and settles 97,000 of them, the CSR is 97%. The remaining 3,000 claims may have been rejected for reasons like misrepresentation, fraud, non-disclosure of material facts, claim falling under an exclusion, or claims pending for incomplete documentation. CSR = (Claims Settled / Total Claims Received) × 100. IRDAI publishes the annual CSR data for all life insurance companies in India. As of 2024, most established life insurers like LIC, HDFC Life, ICICI Prudential, and SBI Life have CSRs in the range of 95% to 99%. Newer insurers like Bandhan Life and Ageas Federal Life have also improved their CSRs significantly. However, CSR alone is not sufficient — the number of claims rejected and the reasons for rejection are equally important data points. CSR should be read alongside the "Average Claim Settlement Time" and the "Claim Amount Settled" percentage. Some insurers settle a high percentage of claims by value (claims settled in ₹ amounts) but reject a high percentage by count (number of claims). The claim amount settled gives a better picture of whether large claims are being honoured. A company that settles 98% of claims by count but only 85% by amount may be rejecting large-value claims more frequently. For health insurance, IRDAI also publishes health-specific claim settlement data, including the "incurred claim ratio" (ICR), which is the ratio of total claims paid to total premiums received. An ICR that is too low (below 50%) may indicate the insurer is collecting far more in premiums than paying out in claims, while an ICR above 100% indicates the insurer is paying more in claims than it collects in premiums — a sustainability concern. When choosing a life or health insurer, look at at least 5 years of CSR trend. A consistently high CSR (above 95%) over multiple years is more meaningful than a spike in one year. Also read the "Claim Rejection Reasons" section in the insurer's annual report. If a large proportion of rejections are for "non-disclosure" or "misrepresentation" even for genuine claims, it suggests aggressive claims underwriting. Finally, check for any regulatory actions or fines issued by IRDAI against the insurer for claims-related issues before making your purchase decision.
