Credit card cash advance fee: Why is it so high and is it worth it?

Asked 22 Jan 2026·289 views
I needed urgent cash and used my credit card for a cash advance of Rs 20,000. The bank charged a 2.5% cash advance fee plus 18% GST on the fee. The total cost is very high. Is there a better alternative for urgent cash needs? What is the normal cash advance fee percentage charged by HDFC, ICICI, and SBI?

Credit card cash advance is one of the most expensive ways to borrow. Most banks charge 2.5-3% of the amount as cash advance fee, with a minimum of Rs 250-500. Interest starts accruing immediately at 2.5-3.5% per month with no interest-free period. HDFC charges 2.5% (min Rs 500), ICICI 2.5% (min Rs 300), SBI 2.5% (min Rs 199).

Better alternatives for urgent cash: (1) Personal loan from your bank at 10-15% interest, (2) Overdraft facility on salary account, (3) Gold loan at 7-9% interest, (4) Borrow from family. Cash advance should only be used as a last resort when no other option is available.
