How can I improve my CIBIL score from 650 to 750 within 6 months?

Asked 17 Jan 2026·3891 views
My current CIBIL score is 650 and I want to take a home loan next year. I have two credit cards with a combined limit of ₹2 lakhs and I usually spend about ₹50,000 per month on them. I pay my bills on time but I hear that my credit utilization might be too high. What specific steps can I take to boost my score quickly?

Your credit utilization ratio is likely the biggest culprit. Try to keep it below 30% of your total limit — that means for a ₹2 lakh limit, don't use more than ₹60,000 at any point in the billing cycle. Request a credit limit increase from your bank without spending more. Also, don't close old credit card accounts as they add to your credit history length.

Check your credit report for errors — I found a defaulted loan from a bank I never took a loan from. Dispute it with CIBIL and it boosted my score by 40 points within 45 days. You can get a free credit report once a year from the CIBIL website.

Avoid making multiple loan or credit card applications in a short span. Each inquiry drops your score by 5-8 points. Space out any new credit applications by at least 6 months.
