UPI transaction failed but money debited: How to get refund?

Asked 27 Feb 2026·445 views
My UPI transaction to a merchant failed but the amount was debited from my bank account. The transaction status shows FAILED in my app. I have raised a complaint with the bank but after 7 days the money has not been refunded. What are the timelines for refund? What escalation steps can I take?

As per RBI guidelines, failed UPI transactions where money is debited must be refunded within T+1 working day for domestic transactions. If not refunded within 5 working days, escalate to the NPCI helpline at 1800-891-0101 or email at support@nPCI.in. Keep your transaction ID and screenshot ready.

File a complaint on the RBI ombudsman portal if the bank does not respond within 30 days. Also raise a ticket on the UPI app. The merchant acquiring bank is responsible for initiating the return. Your bank should credit the amount back from the settlement account within T+1.
