Trick
Split Large Fuel Fills to Maximise Surcharge Waiver
Reviewed by Jiyan Kazi Last reviewed 5 September 2026 Data verified 5 September 2026
Most credit cards in India waive the 1% fuel surcharge, but only on transactions between ₹400 and ₹10,000. The monthly waiver cap is typically ₹100–₹250 depending on the card.
The trick: Instead of a single ₹8,000 fill-up, split it into two transactions of ₹4,000 each. Both stay within the eligible range, and you double your effective waiver within the monthly cap.
Step-by-step:
- Visit your usual fuel station and request two separate transactions.
- Pay each transaction with the same credit card (mixing card and cash forfeits the waiver).
- Keep both receipts until the waiver appears on your statement (usually 1–2 billing cycles).
Best cards for this trick:
- IndianOil HDFC Credit Card: 1% surcharge waiver + 5X reward points on fuel.
- BPCL SBI Octanoctane Card: 1% waiver + 6X on BPCL fuel spends.
- HPCL ICICI Bank Credit Card: 1% waiver + 5% cashback on HP fuel.
Annual savings: If you fuel ₹5,000/month and split each fill, you save ₹600–₹1,200/year in surcharge waivers alone, before counting reward points.
