Unleashed Card
An unleashed card is a term used informally in the Indian credit card market to describe a premium credit card that offers highly generous, uncapped or very high reward rates — effectively “unleashing” maximum value for the cardholder who spends heavily. These cards are typically positioned at the top of an issuer’s portfolio and carry high annual fees (₹5,000 to ₹50,000 or more) that are either waived on meeting substantial minimum annual spend thresholds or accepted as the cost of the premium benefits. The hallmark of an unleashed card is that the reward rate or benefit value is not capped by a monthly or annual ceiling — or if a cap exists, it is set at a very high level that only the top 1% of cardholders reach. For example, a card offering 10X reward points on all spending with no monthly cap could be described as unleashed for the big spender who puts ₹5 lakh or more per month on the card. Benefits typically include unlimited international airport lounge access (via Priority Pass, Dragonpass, or the card network’s own lounge programme), complimentary unlimited domestic lounge access, travel insurance with high coverage limits, golf sessions, concierge services, and accelerated reward points on categories such as dining, travel, and online shopping. Some unleashed cards also offer milestone bonuses — such as additional reward points or vouchers upon reaching a certain annual spend threshold, effectively increasing the net value of the card. The HDFC Infinia, Axis Reserve, and ICICI Bank Emera are examples of unleashed cards in the Indian market. Eligibility for these cards often requires invitation-only approval, a high minimum annual income (typically ₹20 lakh to ₹50 lakh or more), an existing high-value relationship with the issuing bank, and an excellent credit score. The annual fee is justified only when the total value of rewards, lounge visits, and insurance exceeds the fee — a calculation every prospective cardholder should perform before applying.
