Value Account
A value account — also called a premium relationship account or priority banking account — is a savings or current account offered by banks to customers who maintain a high minimum balance, hold premium credit cards, or maintain a significant total relationship value across the bank’s products (including deposits, mutual funds, insurance, and credit cards). Banks such as HDFC Bank ( HDFC Bank Preferred Banking / HDFC Bank Easy Access), ICICI Bank (Power Banking / Privilege Banking), Axis Bank (Priority Banking), and Kotak Mahindra Bank (Kotak Privy League) offer dedicated value accounts that bundle credit card fee waivers, accelerated reward point earning, complimentary airport lounge access, free insurance coverage, and preferential rates on loans and forex transactions. The specific benefits vary by bank and account tier. For credit card holders, the most tangible benefit of holding a value account is the annual fee waiver on mid-tier and premium credit cards. For instance, HDFC Bank may waive the annual fee on the Regalia Gold or Infinia if the cardholder maintains an average quarterly balance of ₹1 lakh or more in their value account, or holds a minimum total relationship value of ₹5 lakh with the bank. Some value accounts also offer accelerated reward points — every ₹100 spent on the linked credit card earns 1.5 to 2 reward points instead of the standard 0.5–1 point. Others offer fee waivers on card upgrades, supplementary card issuance, and lounge access add-ons. Value accounts typically require a high minimum balance (ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹5 lakh per month depending on the bank and tier) and may charge penalty fees if the minimum balance is not maintained. Before opening a value account solely for the credit card fee waiver, cardholders should calculate whether the minimum balance requirement and associated fees outweigh the value of the fee waivers and benefits received.
