Waitlisted Application
A waitlisted application is a credit card application that has been formally submitted — either through the bank’s website, mobile app, branch, or a third-party platform — and acknowledged by the issuer, but has not yet received a final approval or rejection decision. The application is placed in an internal queue, or waitlist, and the applicant is informed that the decision will be communicated within a specified timeframe. In the Indian credit card market, waitlisting typically occurs when an issuer has received a high volume of applications for a particular card, has temporarily paused new approvals for a product variant, or is in the process of reviewing eligibility criteria for applicants who fall into a borderline category (such as those with thin credit files, self-employed applicants with variable income, or applicants who do not meet the minimum income threshold for the applied card). Banks communicate waitlist status to applicants via SMS and email — common messages include “Your application is under review and you will be notified of the decision within 15 working days” — without specifying the exact reason for the delay. During the waitlist period, no hard inquiry is made to the credit bureau if one has not already been made at the time of application submission. Applicants can check the status of their waitlisted application by calling the bank’s customer service line, using the bank’s mobile app (if the application was submitted digitally), or contacting the branch where the application was submitted. The waitlist period can range from a few days to several weeks depending on the issuer’s internal processing queue. If the application is approved after the waitlist period, the card is dispatched and delivered to the applicant. If it is rejected, the applicant receives a rejection intimation — which may or may not specify the reason. Per RBI guidelines, banks must provide a reason for rejection if requested by the applicant. Applicants on a waitlist for a premium card should avoid submitting a fresh application for another card during the waitlist period, as a second hard inquiry within a short timeframe will reduce the credit score and further lower the chances of approval.
