Waived Annual Fee

A waived annual fee refers to a credit card annual fee charge that the issuer chooses not to collect from the cardholder — effectively forgiving the fee for a specific membership year or indefinitely. The waiver can be granted in several ways: automatically by the bank based on predefined criteria, or upon cardholder request through customer service or the mobile app. Automatic fee waivers are the most common and are typically tied to one of three conditions. First, a minimum annual spend threshold: most mid-tier cards waive the annual fee if the cardholder spends between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh on the card in the previous membership year. For example, HDFC Bank commonly waives the ₹1,000 annual fee on its Regalia Gold card if the cardholder spends ₹1 lakh or more in the year. Second, a minimum relationship value: cardholders who maintain a high total relationship value with the bank (deposits, investments, and other credit products) may have their card fee waived regardless of spend. Third, tenure-based waivers: some issuers waive the fee for the first year on all new cards (a joining fee waiver) and may also waive it for subsequent years if the cardholder has held the card for a certain number of years and meets a minimum spend. Request-based waivers are also common — cardholders who call customer service and request a fee waiver are often granted one, particularly if they have been a long-standing customer, have a clean repayment record, or express intent to cancel the card. The bank representative may offer a one-time waiver or a waiver for the current year with the condition that the cardholder spends a specified amount in the next 30 to 90 days. Cardholders should note that a waived annual fee still counts as a benefit in the eyes of the bank and may be included in the calculation of the card’s net value — but it does not appear as a credit or refund on the statement. For premium cards with annual fees of ₹5,000 to ₹50,000, securing a fee waiver is one of the most impactful ways to ensure the card remains profitable for the cardholder.
