Trick
Earn Rewards on Rent Payments Using Smart Workarounds
Rent payments are one of the largest monthly expenses for most Indians, yet they earn zero credit card rewards. Landlords typically don’t accept credit cards, and platforms that do charge 1–3% processing fees.
The trick: Use platforms or card features that reward rent payments or offset the processing fee.
How it works:
- CRED RentPay: Pay rent via CRED using your credit card. CRED doesn’t charge a processing fee for most cards, and some cards earn rewards on CRED spends. Check if your card’s MCC qualifies.
- NoBroker Pay: Pay rent via NoBroker using credit card. Processing fee is 1–2%, but some cards waive this or reward the spend.
- Housing.com: Pay rent via Housing.com using credit card. Processing fee applies, but cards like HDFC Infinia earn enough rewards to offset it.
- Direct UPI to landlord: Some cards reward UPI spends (HDFC UPI Credit Card, Axis UPI Credit Card). Set up automatic UPI transfers to your landlord.
Step-by-step:
- Check if your landlord accepts CRED or NoBroker (many now do).
- Test a small payment first to confirm the MCC and whether rewards post.
- If your card earns rewards on the platform’s MCC, set up monthly autopay.
- If not, use a UPI credit card for direct landlord transfers.
Annual savings: ₹25,000/month rent at 2% reward rate = ₹6,000/year in rewards. Even after 1.5% processing fee, net gain is ₹1,500/year.
