Convert Insurance Premiums into Reward Earning Spends

Insurance premiums (life, health, motor) are typically excluded from credit card reward programs. But there are legitimate workarounds.

The trick: Use payment gateways or card features that don’t apply the insurance exclusion.

How it works:

  1. Amazon Pay gift cards: Buy Amazon Pay gift cards using your reward card (earns full rewards), then use Amazon Pay to pay insurance premiums on platforms that accept it.
  2. CRED: Pay insurance premiums via CRED using your credit card. Some cards earn rewards on CRED spends, though the MCC may vary.
  3. Policybazaar: Some cards treat Policybazaar as a retail MCC rather than insurance MCC, earning full rewards.
  4. HDFC SmartBuy: Buy insurance gift cards on SmartBuy for 5X rewards on Infinia/Diners Club Black.
  5. Card-specific features: HDFC Infinia earns 5 points per ₹150 on all retail spends — check if your insurance MCC qualifies.

Step-by-step:

  • Check your insurance provider’s payment portal for supported payment methods.
  • Test a small payment first to confirm the MCC code and whether rewards post.
  • Use the gift card route if direct card payment doesn’t earn rewards.
  • Keep receipts for reconciliation.

Annual savings: ₹50,000 annual insurance premium at 3–5% reward rate = ₹1,500–₹2,500 in rewards.
