Lounge access is the most-undervalued premium-card perk

For most premium credit-card holders, the lounge benefit is the single most-used feature. A domestic lounge visit (food, drinks, Wi-Fi, shower) costs ₹1,000–₹2,500 if you walk in and pay. A Priority Pass visit overseas costs $32–$50 (₹2,500–₹4,000). If you travel 4+ times a year, the lounge access alone can fund a significant chunk of your annual fee.

The four lounge networks in India

Priority Pass

The dominant independent lounge network. Operates 1,300+ lounges worldwide. Card-network-agnostic — you can access with any card that includes Priority Pass membership.

How to get it:

  • Many premium cards include 2–4 free visits per year (HDFC Regalia, ICICI Emeralde).
  • A few super-premium cards include unlimited visits (HDFC Infinia, Diners Club Black).
  • Some cards don't include Priority Pass but offer direct lounge access via the card network (Visa Infinite, Mastercard World).

How to enter: present your Priority Pass card (or the digital version in the Priority Pass app) and your boarding pass. The lounge scans you in.

Visa Infinite / Visa Signature lounges

Visa operates a network of lounges at major airports. Most are part of the "LoungeKey" network. Indian premium Visa cards (HDFC Infinia, ICICI Emeralde Private) include LoungeKey access.

How to enter: present your Visa Infinite card and your boarding pass. The lounge scans the card.

Mastercard World / World Elite lounges

Mastercard operates the "Mastercard Airport Experiences" lounge network. Available at major Indian airports (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad). Premium Mastercard cards include this benefit.

How to enter: present your Mastercard and your boarding pass. The lounge scans the card.

Amex Centurion / Plaza Premium / Escape lounges

Amex operates its own network (Centurion Lounges) in some cities (Mumbai, Delhi) and has partnerships with Plaza Premium and Escape lounges. Amex Platinum and Platinum Reserve cards include these.

How to enter: present your Amex card and your boarding pass. Many Amex lounges require same-day boarding on an Amex-accepted airline.

Airline-owned lounges (not card-network-affiliated)

Some premium cards include vouchers for specific airline lounges:

  • HDFC Infinia: 8 international and 8 domestic Priority Pass visits.
  • Amex Platinum Travel: Taj lounges (domestic), Plaza Premium, plus the airline-specific lounges in Delhi (Air India's Maharaja Lounge is included for some variants).

The airline lounges tend to be the best-maintained in major Indian airports. The Maharaja Lounge in Delhi is among the best in the country.

Lounge etiquette and rules

Most lounges enforce:

  • Dress code: smart casual. No shorts, no flip-flops.
  • Boarding pass: must be same-day and from a flight at that airport.
  • Guest policy: most premium cards include the cardholder only; some include one guest.
  • Time limit: 2–3 hours typical.
  • No-show / late: most lounges hold your access 30 minutes before your boarding time.

If you bring a guest, the guest may be charged (typically $32 per guest) unless your card explicitly includes guest access.

The catch: capacity

Premium lounges get crowded. At peak times (early morning, late evening), the wait can be 20–40 minutes. Some lounges limit Priority Pass entries during peak periods. HDFC's Infinia and DCB have the most reliable entry because of the unlimited Priority Pass benefit.

How to maximise lounge value

  • Time your visit for the right duration. Most lounges limit to 3 hours. Arrive 90 minutes before your boarding and stay 90 minutes — enough for a meal, a shower, and Wi-Fi.
  • Use the showers. Most lounges have free shower facilities. A shower before a long flight is worth ₹500–₹1,000 if you paid cash.
  • Take the food to-go. Most lounges have buffet-style food. Take a plate; eat at the gate if you need to leave early.
  • Avoid alcohol if you're crossing state borders. Some states (Gujarat, Bihar) restrict alcohol. Drinking at the Delhi lounge and re-entering the airport can technically violate the rule, though enforcement is rare.

The bottom line

Lounge access is the single most-used perk of any premium card. If you travel 4+ times a year, the perk alone justifies a ₹5,000–₹12,500 annual fee. Pick the card that matches your lounge pattern: HDFC Infinia or DCB for unlimited access, Axis Atlas for 8+8 with a low fee, Amex Platinum Travel for Taj lounges. Check the lounge list at your home airport before applying — not every card unlocks every lounge in your city.
