The four cards that dominate online cashback

If you shop online regularly (Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Swiggy, Zomato, bill payments), the right card can return 3%–5% on most of that spend. The four contenders:

  • Amazon Pay ICICI — 5% on Amazon (Prime), 3% on Amazon (non-Prime), 2% on Amazon Pay bill payments.
  • Flipkart Axis — 5% on Flipkart, Cleartrip, and partner offline MCCs, capped at ₹500 per cycle.
  • SBI Cashback — 5% on online spends (broad category), capped at ₹5,000 per cycle (₹1 lakh of online spend).
  • HDFC Millennia — 5% on Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, partner offline MCCs, capped at ₹1,000 per cycle.

The cap structure

The cap is the single biggest difference:

CardCashbackCapEffective monthly limit
Amazon Pay ICICI5% on AmazonNone (unlimited for Prime)Unlimited
Flipkart Axis5% on Flipkart₹500/cycle₹10,000 of Flipkart spend
SBI Cashback5% on online (broad)₹5,000/cycle₹1,00,000 of online spend
HDFC Millennia5% on Amazon/Flipkart/Myntra₹1,000/cycle₹20,000 of eligible spend

The cap matters for high spenders. Amazon Pay ICICI wins for unlimited Amazon spend; SBI Cashback wins for broad online spend; HDFC Millennia is the middle ground for diversified online shoppers.

The math: a typical ₹30,000 monthly online spend

Assume you spend ₹15,000 on Amazon, ₹10,000 on Flipkart, and ₹5,000 on Swiggy.

Ad slot: article

Amazon Pay ICICI alone

  • Amazon: ₹15,000 × 5% = ₹750.
  • Flipkart: ₹0.
  • Swiggy: ₹0.
  • Total: ₹750/month = ₹9,000/year.

Flipkart Axis alone

  • Amazon: ₹0.
  • Flipkart: ₹10,000 × 5% capped ₹500 = ₹500.
  • Swiggy: ₹0.
  • Total: ₹500/month = ₹6,000/year.

SBI Cashback alone

  • Amazon: ₹15,000 × 5% = ₹750.
  • Flipkart: ₹10,000 × 5% = ₹500.
  • Swiggy: ₹5,000 × 5% = ₹250.
  • Total: ₹1,500/month = ₹18,000/year.

HDFC Millennia alone

  • Amazon + Flipkart combined: ₹25,000 × 5% capped ₹1,000 = ₹1,000.
  • Swiggy: ₹0 (MCC 5812 not in HDFC's online merchant list).
  • Total: ₹1,000/month = ₹12,000/year.

Smart routing

  • Amazon on Amazon Pay ICICI: ₹750.
  • Flipkart on Flipkart Axis: ₹500.
  • Swiggy on SBI Cashback: ₹250.
  • Total: ₹1,500/month = ₹18,000/year.

The smart routing matches SBI Cashback's returns. The benefit of holding all three cards is the unlimited Amazon cashback (which SBI Cashback caps at ₹5,000/cycle for ₹1 lakh spend).

When to pick each card

Amazon Pay ICICI if:

  • You shop on Amazon more than any other platform.
  • You have Amazon Prime (3% vs 5% is a real difference).
  • You want lifetime-free, no annual fee.

Flipkart Axis if:

  • You shop on Flipkart more than any other platform.
  • You want the Flipkart-specific 5% (no equivalent on SBI Cashback).

SBI Cashback if:

  • You shop across multiple online platforms.
  • Your online spend exceeds ₹1 lakh/year (the SBI cap kicks in at ₹5,000/cycle).
  • You value the 5% on Swiggy, Zomato, and other online merchants.

HDFC Millennia if:

  • You split your online spend across Amazon, Flipkart, and Myntra.
  • You don't want to hold multiple cards.
  • You're willing to pay ₹1,000 annual fee (waived at ₹1L spend).

The hidden earn: offline partner MCCs

HDFC Millennia and Flipkart Axis both offer 5% on partner offline MCCs. The list changes quarterly, but typically includes:

  • HDFC Millennia offline partners: Big Bazaar, Reliance Retail, Croma, Shoppers Stop, Westside.
  • Flipkart Axis offline partners: Cleartrip, Uber, Ola, PVR.

If you spend ₹20,000/month at offline partner MCCs, the 5% return is ₹1,000/month (capped at ₹1,000 for HDFC; uncapped but merchant-restricted for Flipkart Axis).

The bottom line

For online cashback in 2026, the right answer depends on your spend pattern:

  • Amazon-heavy: Amazon Pay ICICI is unmatched (5% unlimited).
  • Flipkart-heavy: Flipkart Axis.
  • Diversified online: SBI Cashback (broad category coverage).
  • Online + offline mix: HDFC Millennia.

Most cardholders benefit from holding Amazon Pay ICICI + SBI Cashback. The two-card combo returns 18,000–₹24,000/year on a ₹30,000 monthly online spend. Add Flipkart Axis if your Flipkart spend exceeds ₹10,000/month, or HDFC Millennia if your offline partner spend is significant.
