HDFC Regalia Gold: Is the ₹2,500 Annual Fee Worth It in 2026?

The short answer

HDFC Regalia Gold makes financial sense if you spend at least ₹5 lakh per year on the card — and if you consistently claim the milestone vouchers. Without the milestones, the base earn rate of 0.25% (5 points per ₹200 at ₹0.50 per point) does not justify the ₹2,500 annual fee.

This article shows the full math.

What the card costs

HDFC Regalia Gold charges:

  • Joining fee: ₹2,500 (not waivable).
  • Annual fee: ₹2,500 from year two onwards, waivable if you spend ₹4 lakh or more within 12 billing cycles of the anniversary year.

So from year two, the effective annual cost is ₹0 if you hit the spend threshold — but only if you spend ₹4 lakh. The first year always costs ₹2,500 minimum.

What the card earns

Base earn rate

The base reward rate is 5 points per ₹200 spent, worth approximately ₹0.50 per point when redeemed on SmartBuy flights or hotels. That works out to:

5 points per ₹200 × ₹0.50 per point = 0.25% cashback on base spend.

On ₹5 lakh of annual base spend, you earn 12,500 points = ₹6,250 in redemption value against a ₹2,500 annual fee. Gross gain: ₹3,750.

But this ignores caps, category restrictions, and the milestone structure.

The monthly and category caps

The card caps accelerated rewards:

  • Monthly reward-point cap: 50,000 points per statement cycle.
  • Per-category accelerated cap: 5,000 points per category on accelerated spend (e.g., 5X brand categories).

For most cardholders, the monthly cap is not the binding constraint. The per-category cap matters if you concentrate spend on the accelerated brands (Myntra, Nykaa, Reliance Digital).

The accelerated earn categories

Regalia Gold advertises 5X on select brands and up to 10X on SmartBuy hotel and flight bookings. These accelerated rates have conditions:

  • 5X on Myntra, Nykaa, Reliance Digital, and Instant Vouchers: capped at 5,000 accelerated points per category per statement cycle.
  • 10X on SmartBuy flights and hotels: only on specific booking windows and partner offers; not a permanent feature.

The 10X SmartBuy rate is the headline but it is not available every month. Factor in 3–4 promotional windows per year, each lasting 7–14 days.

The milestone vouchers

Regalia Gold’s real value is in the milestone structure — not the base earn rate.

Annual milestones

Spend threshold Benefit
₹5 lakh in anniversary year ₹5,000 flight voucher
₹7.5 lakh in anniversary year Additional ₹5,000 flight voucher
₹1 lakh in first 90 days Complimentary Club Vistara Silver Tier + MMT Black Gold membership

The two ₹5,000 flight vouchers (total ₹10,000) at ₹5 lakh + ₹7.5 lakh spend are the card’s primary value drivers.

Quarterly milestones

Spend threshold Benefit
₹1.5 lakh per quarter ₹1,500 Myntra or Nykaa voucher

Four quarters × ₹1,500 = ₹6,000 per year in shopping vouchers, if you hit every quarter.

Total milestone value (if you hit everything)

  • 2 × ₹5,000 flight vouchers = ₹10,000
  • 4 × ₹1,500 shopping vouchers = ₹6,000
  • Club Vistara Silver + MMT Black Gold (valued at ₹1,500–₹2,000 by most issuers)
  • Total milestone value: ₹17,000–₹18,000

Against this, your cost is ₹2,500 (year one) or ₹0 (year two, if you spend ₹4 lakh).

The break-even calculation

Year one (joining fee not waivable)

Spend level Base reward value Milestone vouchers Net annual value
₹2 lakh ₹2,500 Nil (below thresholds) −₹2,500 (fee not recovered)
₹4 lakh ₹5,000 Nil (below ₹5L threshold) +₹2,500 (fee waived, net +₹2,500)
₹5 lakh ₹6,250 +₹5,000 flight voucher +₹8,750
₹7.5 lakh ₹9,375 +₹10,000 flight voucher +₹16,875
₹10 lakh ₹12,500 +₹10,000 + ₹6,000 shopping vouchers +₹25,000

At ₹5 lakh spend, the milestones recover the fee and leave ₹8,750 net — before any quarterly vouchers.

Year two (annual fee waivable at ₹4 lakh)

At ₹4 lakh base spend, the fee is waived. The base earn (₹5,000) already exceeds the ₹2,500 annual fee that would have applied, so the effective fee is ₹0. If you hit the ₹5 lakh annual milestone:

₹6,250 base reward + ₹5,000 flight voucher = ₹11,250 against ₹0 net fee = 2.25% effective return.

This is competitive with the best cashback cards in India.

The quarterly calculation

At ₹1.5 lakh per quarter (₹6 lakh annually):

  • Base reward: ₹6 lakh × 0.25% = ₹7,500
  • Quarterly vouchers: 4 × ₹1,500 = ₹6,000
  • Annual fee: ₹2,500 (year one), ₹0 (year two at ₹4 lakh spend)
  • Net year one: ₹7,500 + ₹6,000 − ₹2,500 = ₹11,000 on ₹6 lakh spend (1.83% effective return)
  • Net year two: ₹7,500 + ₹6,000 = ₹13,500 on ₹6 lakh spend (2.25% effective return)

What the fee waiver actually requires

The annual fee waiver requires ₹4 lakh spend within 12 billing cycles of the anniversary date — not within the calendar year. This is important:

  • If your anniversary is in March, you have from March to March to hit ₹4 lakh.
  • Missing the threshold means paying ₹2,500 in year two and beyond.

Track your spend against the waiver threshold in your HDFC app. Set a reminder at month 10 of your anniversary year if you are below ₹3.5 lakh.

Who should keep the card

Regalia Gold is worth holding if two conditions are met:

  1. You spend ₹5 lakh or more on the card per anniversary year. The milestone vouchers at ₹5 lakh and ₹7.5 lakh are the primary value. Below ₹5 lakh, the base earn rate of 0.25% is mediocre.
  2. You can use the vouchers. The flight voucher requires booking through HDFC’s SmartBuy or Vistara website. The Myntra/Nykaa vouchers require shopping at those brands. If you don’t shop at either, the ₹6,000 in quarterly vouchers has zero value.

Who should cancel or downgrade

Cancel or downgrade if:

  • You consistently spend below ₹3 lakh per year on the card. The base earn rate does not justify the fee, and you won’t hit milestones.
  • You cannot use the quarterly shopping vouchers. If you don’t shop on Myntra or Nykaa, you are leaving ₹6,000 per year on the table.
  • You got the card for lounge access only. The 6 Priority Pass visits per year (international) and 12 domestic lounge visits per year (3 per quarter on ₹60,000 quarterly spend) are available on cards with lower or zero annual fees.

The lounge access reality check

The domestic lounge access requires ₹60,000 in quarterly spend — that is ₹2.4 lakh per year just to maintain access. The international Priority Pass gives 6 visits per year, which is sufficient for occasional travellers but limiting for frequent flyers.

If lounge access is your primary reason for holding Regalia Gold, calculate whether the 12 domestic + 6 international visits are worth ₹2,500 (or ₹0 after fee waiver) to you. For most travellers, yes — but only if you actually use them.

The HDFC Regalia Gold vs alternatives

Regalia Gold Axis Vistara Platinum ICICI Emeralde
Annual fee ₹2,500 (waivable at ₹4L) ₹1,500 (waivable at ₹2L) ₹9,500 (not waivable)
Base earn rate 0.25% 0.30% 0.40%

Lounge access 12 domestic + 6 international 8 domestic + 2 international 4 domestic + 4 international
Forex markup ~2% 2% 2%
Best for ₹5L+ spend with voucher usage Moderate travellers, lower fee Relationship banking customers

Regalia Gold wins on milestone value at high spend. Axis Vistara Platinum wins on fee accessibility. ICICI Emeralde is in a different tier (invite-only, relationship-gated).

The bottom line

HDFC Regalia Gold earns its annual fee if you spend ₹5 lakh or more per anniversary year and actively use the milestone vouchers. The card is most valuable for:

  • Travellers who book flights on SmartBuy or Vistara (the ₹10,000 in annual flight vouchers).
  • Shoppers who use Myntra or Nykaa regularly (the ₹6,000 in quarterly vouchers).
  • Someone who can hit ₹4 lakh in year two to waive the fee and still qualify for milestones.

Below ₹5 lakh annual spend, the base earn rate of 0.25% does not justify keeping the card open. Downgrade or cancel.

FAQ

Does the Regalia Gold joining fee get reversed?

HDFC has occasionally offered fee reversal promotions within 30–60 days of spending a threshold (e.g., ₹5,000 in 30 days). Check the HDFC offers portal after activation. If no reversal offer appears, the joining fee is not refunded.

Can I hold Regalia Gold alongside another HDFC card?

Yes. HDFC allows multiple cards. Holding Regalia Gold alongside HDFC Infinia (for the 0% forex markup on international travel) is a common strategy: Regalia Gold for domestic milestone vouchers, Infinia for international spend.

Do the flight vouchers expire?

The ₹5,000 flight voucher is typically valid for 6–12 months from issuance and is redeemable only on SmartBuy flight bookings or Air India / Vistara directly. Check the voucher validity date in your HDFC account — expired vouchers are not reinstated.

Is the fee waiver based on calendar year or anniversary year?

Anniversary year. You have 12 billing cycles from your renewal date to spend ₹4 lakh and get the next year’s annual fee waived. This is different from a calendar-year basis.

What happens to milestone progress if I cancel the card?

All unclaimed vouchers are forfeited on cancellation. If you are at ₹4.9 lakh spend and cancel before the anniversary, you lose the ₹5,000 flight voucher. Claim all vouchers before cancelling.
