SmartBuy vs Air Vistara Transfer: Where HDFC Points Are Worth More

HDFC Rewards points have a ₹1 floor on SmartBuy and up to ₹2+ via Air Vistara transfers. Here's the comparison.

The two main redemption routes for HDFC points

HDFC Bank Rewards points (earned on Regalia, Millennia, DCB, Infinia, and most other HDFC cards) have two main high-value redemption routes:

  1. SmartBuy portal — flights, hotels, products, gift cards, recharge. 1 point = 1 rupee on flights and hotels (post the 5X SmartBuy boost, the effective rate is 5 points per ₹150 spend). For statement credit and other categories, 1 point = ₹1.
  2. Air Vistara / Air Asia / British Airways Avios transfer — convert HDFC points to airline miles at fixed ratios, then redeem for award flights.

The "right" route depends on your travel pattern, your willingness to deal with airline award inventory, and the cash price of the ticket you'd otherwise buy.

SmartBuy, in detail

SmartBuy offers:

  • Flights: 1 point = 1 rupee. You can pay entirely in points or mix points + cash. The portal adds a small service fee (₹99–₹300 per booking).
  • Hotels: 1 point = 1 rupee. Same fee structure.
  • Products and gift cards: variable, often 1 point = 0.6–0.8 rupee.
  • Mobile recharge: 1 point = 1 rupee (best value after flights).

For most cardholders, SmartBuy flights are the easy ceiling: ₹1 per point. If you redeem a Delhi–Mumbai economy ticket at ₹5,000, you spend 5,000 points — that's ₹1 per point, which is the headline floor.

The "5X on SmartBuy" earn rate on premium cards means ₹150 spent on SmartBuy flights = 5 points × (₹150 / 150) — wait, the math is: 5 reward points per ₹150. On SmartBuy, that's 5 reward points per ₹150 of flight spend, redeemable at ₹1 per point = 3.33% return. Higher than the 3.33% baseline because the earn rate is the same but the burn is at the headline.

Air Vistara transfer, in detail

HDFC Rewards points transfer to Air Vistara (now merged with Air India) at varying ratios depending on your card:

  • Infinia / DCB: 1 HDFC point = 1 Vistara point (best ratio).
  • Regalia: 1 HDFC point = 0.5 Vistara points (worse ratio).
  • Millennia: 1 HDFC point = 0.5 Vistara points.

Vistara points (now Air India miles) are redeemable for award flights on Air India, Star Alliance partners (Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, ANA, Turkish, United, etc.), and Air India's own domestic network. The value of a Vistara point on a partner redemption can be ₹1.5 to ₹2.5 — significantly higher than the SmartBuy floor of ₹1.

For example, an economy Delhi–Mumbai ticket on Air India costs ₹5,000 cash or 5,000 Vistara points via the Air India portal. The "value per point" here is ₹1. But a business-class Delhi–Frankfurt on Lufthansa (via the Star Alliance award chart) might cost 60,000 Vistara points. The cash price is ₹4,00,000. Value per point: ₹6.67 — but the award inventory may not always be available.

The catch: award inventory

The catch with transfer partners is award seat availability. Airlines release a limited number of seats per flight at the "saver" award rate. Peak travel seasons and popular routes often have zero award availability.

If you have flexibility on dates and routes, transfer partners deliver 2X–5X the value per point of SmartBuy. If you need a specific flight on a specific date, SmartBuy is more reliable.

When to use which route

  • Use SmartBuy when: you need a specific flight, you're booking close to the travel date, you don't want to deal with airline award rules, or your card doesn't transfer at a favourable ratio.
  • Use Air Vistara transfer when: you have flexibility on dates, you're booking business or first class, you can wait for award inventory, your card transfers at 1:1 (Infinia or DCB).

A useful rule of thumb: if the cash price of the flight is above ₹15,000 per ticket, transferring HDFC points to Vistara often beats SmartBuy. Below ₹15,000, SmartBuy is usually competitive enough.

British Airways Avios — the hidden route

HDFC points also transfer to British Airways Avios (1 point = 0.5 Avios on most cards). Avios is a useful currency for:

  • Domestic flights on Vistara (via Avios + partner chart).
  • Flights to Europe on British Airways.
  • Flights to the Middle East on Qatar Airways.

The Avios chart can be very generous on partner awards during off-peak dates. If you have a specific redemption in mind, search Avios availability on britishairways.com before transferring.

The bottom line

Both routes are valid. For most cardholders, SmartBuy is the right default — it's predictable, easy, and gives you ₹1 per point. For the 10% of redemptions where you can find partner award inventory, transfer routes can deliver 2X–5X more value. The choice depends on whether you have the time and flexibility to chase award seats. If not, SmartBuy your points and bank the simplicity.
