Glossary term
Waive on Express
Waive on express refers to a promotional fee waiver applied to a credit card’s annual fee when the application is submitted through the bank’s express or fully digital application channel — typically the bank’s own mobile app, website, or a co-branded digital platform. The express channel waiver is a marketing tool used by issuers to drive digital adoption, reduce the processing cost associated with paper-based applications, and attract customers who prefer a frictionless online experience. When a cardholder applies for a credit card through the bank’s mobile app and selects a product that offers the express waiver, the joining fee and sometimes the first-year annual fee are automatically waived at the time of approval — no separate request is needed. The waiver amount and duration vary by issuer and card type: some cards waive only the joining fee (which can range from ₹500 to ₹3,000), while others waive both the joining fee and the annual fee for the first year. On HDFC Bank’s digital application channel, for example, select card variants offer a ₹500 waiver on the joining fee as an express channel benefit. The waive-on-express benefit is typically visible as a line item on the first credit card statement, showing the fee being charged and then immediately reversed or showing a zero charge from the outset. Cardholders should confirm that their application was processed through the digital channel to qualify for the waiver — applying through a third-party website or a physical branch form may not trigger the express waiver even if the same card product is applied for. The waive-on-express is distinct from the spend-based waive threshold, which requires minimum annual spending to unlock the fee waiver — the express waiver is automatic upon approval through the right channel and does not require any spend condition. However, if the cardholder cancels the card within a specified period (often 30 to 90 days), some issuers claw back the waived fee as part of the cancellation terms.
