Waive Threshold

The waive threshold is the minimum spend or relationship value that a cardholder must achieve within a defined period — typically the membership year — for the card’s annual fee to be automatically waived by the issuer. The waive threshold is a key metric for cardholders evaluating whether a credit card will ultimately cost them nothing or carry a real annual fee burden. Most issuers publish their waive thresholds in the card’s terms and conditions and schedule of charges. Common structures include a flat annual spend target (for example, HDFC Bank may require ₹8 lakh in annual spend on an Infinia to waive the ₹12,500 annual fee), a quarterly spend target (some cards require ₹1 lakh per quarter, totalling ₹4 lakh per year), or a cumulative relationship value with the bank across all products. The waive threshold is calculated on eligible transactions — most issuers exclude cash withdrawals (cash advances), transactions at specific MCC codes such as fuel stations and insurance, EMI conversions, and wallet loads from the spend calculation. Only qualifying retail spends count. For example, if a card offers a waive threshold of ₹3 lakh per year and the cardholder spends ₹3.2 lakh, but ₹50,000 of that was converted to a no-cost EMI, the actual qualifying spend may be only ₹2.7 lakh — potentially falling below the threshold and resulting in the annual fee being charged. The fee waiver is typically applied automatically on the card’s anniversary billing date if the threshold has been met. Cardholders who narrowly miss the waive threshold sometimes receive a one-time courtesy waiver from customer service if they call to request it, particularly if they have been long-standing customers. If a cardholder fails to meet the waive threshold and the annual fee is charged, the fee can usually be reversed if the cardholder achieves the threshold within a grace period (typically 30 to 60 days after the anniversary date) by making additional purchases.
